One of the "tunnels" for miners and prisoners to move around in. Old New Gate Prison and Copper Mine.. East Granby, CT.
Ruins of the "New" Prison.. New gate soon had too many Inmates to keep "Down in hell" so they built an above ground unit, but because of heat in summer and freezing cold in winter, Inmates often chose to live in the mines where its a constant 59 degrees F and there were no bugs, rodents and weather. The New building housed "about 200 or more" inmates, sleeping two to a bunk! The Building was eventualy destroyed by a fire, set by the Inmates. Old New Gate Prison, East Granby CT.
The original entrance to the Prison.. Or "The Mouth Of Hell" as they called it then. There was a ladder going up and at night after all the inmates would go down, the guards would pull up the ladder and shout the grid and lock it, then leave the building above and lock the heavy wooden door. The Stockades... This small room just off the main entrance was used to hold an unruly inmate from time to time. Old New Gate Prison and Copper Mine.. East Granby, CT.
"The Hole" Solitary Confinment.. Shackled here, in a damp, cramped space, most men would start to go crazy after only a few days! This section of the prison / mine, was only about 51/2 feet tall.. Guards were told to "Ignor" prisoners in solitary at all costs, causing one man to loose both legs after an attempt to get out of the hole by pulling the shackles up to his knees and cutting off the circulation to his legs, the guards heard his pleas for help after Gang Green had set in but they did as they were instructed and Ignored him, after the other inmates complained of his constant screaming, the warden ordered the Prisoner removed but it was too late, both legs were amputated at the knee and the man was put back into Solitary as a punishment.. where he eventually died.
